A. Answer the following questions in brief:

 

1.  What is hydroelectricity? Why is it popular?

Ans: An electricity which is produced from water is called a hydroelectricity. It is popular because this form of energy is renewable and cheap and helps in reducing emission of greenhouse gases.

 

2.  What are the three main functions of multi projects?

Ans: The three main functions of multipurpose project are –

i.         It provides water for irrigation.

ii.       It generates hydroelectricity.

iii.      It also controls the floodwater.

3.  Why is water considered a natural resource?

Ans: Water is considered a natural resource because water occurs naturally in the environment and is useful to humans and other living organisms. Hence it is a natural resource.

 

4.  How are water bodies polluted?

Ans: The water bodies by domestic sewage, organic waste, plant nutrients, toxic chemicals, sediments, oil slick and radioactive substances that flow into them.

 

5.  From what sources would you get your supply of freshwater?

Ans: From the Lakes, rivers, ponds and streams.

 

B. Answer the following questions in detail. 

1.  Why is there water scarcity in the world?

Ans: There is water scarcity in the world because of the increasing population, human activities and climate change.

 

2.  How is the world trying to conserve the water?

Ans: Some of the major steps taken to conserve water are as follow-

i.             Sea water desalination

ii.           River cleaning to improve quality of water.

iii.          Water reuse and recycling

iv.         Rainwater Harvesting.

v.           Afforestation to reduce run-off.

 

3.  Write an account of the major usage of water.

Ans: The major usage of water are agriculture, industry and domestic purposes. Approximately 70% of water are used in agriculture, primarily for irrigation. The use of water by industry varies with the level of development.

 

4.  How can you conserve water at home?

Ans: We can conserve the water at home by-

1.  Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

2.  Mend leaking taps.

3.  Reduce your shower time.

4.  Don’t leave the water running while washing dishes or clothes.

5.  Avoid too much of flushing of clothes.

 

5.  Why are multi-purpose projects popular?

        Ans: The multi-purpose projects are popular because-

i.  It produces hydroelectricity,

ii.  It controls the flood,

iii.          It provides water for irrigation.

iv.         It also supports piscicultures and tourism.
