1. What is a wildlife sanctuary?
Ans: A wildlife sanctuary is
an area where animal habitats and their surroundings are protected from any
sort of disturbance.
2. Where are the coniferous forests
found in India?
Ans: In India, Coniferous
Forest are found on the higher slopes of the Himalayas in Kashmir, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh.
3. Name the three types of forests.
Ans: The three types of
forests are –
i. Temperate
forest
ii. Taiga
forest
iii. Tropical
forest
4. How have humans changed the land
cover of the Earth?
Ans: Humans have changed the
land cover of the earth by different types of activities like- agriculture,
animals grazing and Urbanisation.
5. What are national parks?
Ans: National parks can be defined as
areas set aside by the national governments to preserve the natural
environment.
B. Answer the following questions in detail.
1. Why is forest conservation
important?
Ans: Forest
conservation is important to conserve and preserve forests and wildlife and to allow
ecosystem to function.
2. Write an account of the major
types of forests in the world.
Ans: The major types of forest
in the world are Temperate Forest, Taiga Forest and Tropical Forest. The
Temperate Forest, both evergreen and deciduous, are found between the 30o and
50o latitudes both north and south of the
Equator. The Taiga Forest is found between 50o degree
and 70o latitudes in
Eurasia and North America. They are also found on top of mountains in other
areas. Tropical forests are also found between 23o N and
20oS latitudes. These may be evergreen or deciduous
forests.
3. What are the main lists used to
indicate risk levels of wildlife? Define each category. Provide examples.
Ans: The main list used to
indicate risk levels of wildlife are –
i.
Extinction species: Extinction
happens when the species dies because of environmental changes caused by
climate change or natural disasters.
ii.
Endangered species: Endangered
species are those plants and wildlife that are so small in number that they
face the risk of becoming extinct.
iii.
Threatened species: These
are the plants, animals, birds and insects that are at risk or becoming
endangered in the near future.
4. Write an account of wildlife in
India.
Ans: India has as many as 59 national
parks and 372 sanctuaries. There are 1200 species of birds and 350 species of
mammals in the forests of India. In addition, the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, is
the world’s largest natural breeding place for flamingos.
5. What steps can be taken towards
forest conservation?
Ans: Some of the steps taken
towards forest conservation are-
i.
By demarcating forests as protected
areas and preventing illegal logging.
ii.
By using recycled paper to reduce pressure
on trees
iii.
By preventing poaching of wildlife
iv.
By planting lots of trees
v.
By protecting endangered and
threatened species.
