A. Answer the following in brief.

1.  What are the two main types of power resources? Give examples.

Ans: The two main types of power resources are.

a.  Renewable source- e.g – Hydel power and Solar power

b.  Non renewable source.- e.g – Petroleum and coal

 

2.  What are the different sectors that consume energy?

Ans: The different sectors that consume energy are- Industry, Residential, and Transportation sectors.

 

3.  Where would you find petroleum in India?

Ans: We can find petroleum in eastern Assam. in Gujarat and off - shore in the Arabian Sea.

 

4.  Who are the five biggest producers of iron ore in the world?

Ans: The five biggest producers of Iron ore in the world are China, Brazil, Australia, India and Russia.

 

5.  What are metallic minerals? Give examples.

Ans: Metallic minerals are those minerals which contains metals such as copper, silver, iron, nickel, and cobalt.

 

6.  Why is solar energy not used widely?

Ans: Solar energy are not popular because it requires a large amount of money and it is so costly.

 

B. Answer the following questions in detail.

1.  What are the alternative power sources available to humans? Where are they found and how they are useful?

Ans: The alternative power source available to humans are solar, wind, tidal, nuclear, and geothermal plants.

They are already existing in nature and are natural resources. They are non exhaustible and emission free, therefore they are useful.

 

2.  What are the different methods of mining?

Ans: The different methods of mining are:

i.             Open-cast mining

ii.           Placer mining

iii.          Underground mining

 

3.  What are fossil fuels? Why is there a growing global concern about them?

Ans: The natural resources which are formed from the dead remains of living organisms are known as fossil fuel.

With the increasing in industrialisation and population the demand is rising rapidly. Therefore, there is a growing global concern about them.

 

4.  Write an account on the mineral resources in India.

Ans: India has lots of mineral resources, besides the ones mentioned above. India has 89 minerals, of which 11 are metallic, 52 non-metallic, 4 are mineral fuels and 22 minor minerals. India is the world’s third largest producer of Chromite.

 

5.  What is bio- fuel? Describe some bio-fuel available in India.

Ans: Any fuel that is derived from biomass (a plant material or animal waste), is known as bio- fuel.

In India, jatropha plant seeds have been in use for the production of biodiesel in remote areas. India is the fourth largest producer of ethanol.
