A. Answer the following questions in brief.
1. What is Shifting Agriculture?
Ans: Farming system in which a plot of land is
cleared and cultivated for some time and then abandon for new plots.
2. Define the term agriculture.
Ans: Agriculture is the farming or cultivation of
land, growing of crops, fruits and vegetables and the rearing of livestocks.
3. What is Mixed farming?
Ans: This system of agriculture is a combination of cropping
and animal husbandry. Here, both crops and livestock are produced in one farm.
4. What is market gardening?
Ans: Market gardening is a type of farming where
vegetables are grown in small market garden closer the local market for sale.
It is also called a truck farming.
5. How does climate influence agriculture?
Ans: In any area, the temperature and rainfall
determine the types of crop that can be grown. For example, a crop like rice
would require high temperatures and heavy rainfall, while wheat would require
low temperature and less rainfall.
B. Answer
the following questions in detail.
1.
Write
an account of commercial grain farming.
Ans: In this System, A large area of land is used but the amount of capital
and labour used is small compared to the size of the land. Large tracts of land
are required to produce in large quantities. The work is highly mechanised to
obtain higher output. Another feature of this farming is that a single crop is
grown throughout the year.
2.
What
factors influence the different types of agriculture and how?
Ans: The factors which influence the different types of agriculture are –
i.
Physical factors: The physical factors include like – Firstly, soil is
found in an area determine the type of crops grown in that area. Secondly, relief-
the landform of an area determines whether the area is suitable for agriculture
or not. Thirdly, Climate, in any area, the temperature and
rainfall determine the types of crops that can be grown.
ii.
Human factors:
The Human factors include- Firstly, Capital- this is the amount
of money needed to buy seeds, machines fertilisers. Secondly, labour-
all types of farming need labour in the form of humans or machines or both.
Thirdly, market- it signifies customers who buy agriculture
produce.
3. Differentiate between intensive farming and extensive farming.
Ans: In intensive farming, a large amount of
labour and capital is used on a small area of land to obtain high yields per
unit area. Use of high-quality seeds, irrigation, fertilisers, insecticides,
and high labour is required. Whereas in extensive farming, a large area
of land is used but amount of capital and labour used is small compared to the
size of the land.
4.
Write an account of subsistence farming.
Ans: Subsistence farming is a system of farming in
which the farmer grows crops and keeps livestock for the needs of his or her
family. The farmer is able to grow crops that the family eats and raise animals
that provide food for the family only.
